Director:Hector Babenco
Writer:Leonard Schrader(based from Manuel Puig's book of the same name)
A film about the odd relationship of two cellmates: one political prisoner caught after an important leftwing mission ,another an homosexual child molester as they seek solace and comfort in their reclusive cell.
Though the film has an oddly outdated vision of homosexuality (William Hurt's Luis Molina is flimsy, weak, and is portrayed as predatory by nature), its story is just quite exquisite. Hurt's Molina and Raul Julia's Valentin Arregui relationship was believable and actually endearing in hindsight. They are both lonely and seeking for someone even though Arregui was trying to hide it. Until the last minutes when both find themselves in the pedestal of life and death, you feel for them as they are truly seeking for something more than what is already given to them. In addition, Julia's Hot and Hurt's cold performance complimented each other very well.
[RATING:4.0/5]
Other Notes:
(1.)I actually thought this film was a musical after reading the title and actually having a real broadway musical about it.
(2.)My second Hurt film after Body Heat and third Julia [rip] film after Addam Family film series
